Data Center CR: From Hydro to Crypto
Costa Rica generates more than 98% of its electricity from clean sources, but a structural restriction prevents private producers from selling their energy independently.
When the national utility (ICE) cancelled contracts with private producers in 2020, we partnered with one of them to turn that crisis into a strategic opportunity: converting a hydroelectric plant into one of the world's first sustainable cryptocurrency mining centers.
Build a business model where the system didn't allow one.
The challenge was to reinvent an entire business model under legal and market constraints. The solution couldn't rely on the existing system — it had to create a new one: spaces purpose-built for cryptocurrency mining, powered by 100% renewable energy, with clean electricity included in the rate.
An energy crisis turned into a global business model.
The result was an innovative, scalable and sustainable model that positions Costa Rica as a global benchmark in eco-friendly cryptocurrency mining.
The operation reached more than 200 clients, a 200% profit margin, 10 mining containers in operation and 700 active machines.
We turned a structural limitation into a business model no one else had imagined.
